Ian Hunter Garden Design and Build offers a service from initial design to completed garden. Most people choose the full design-and-build package; however, once you have the design drawings you are free to choose another contractor to build your garden. Ian Hunter personally designs the garden and oversees all construction work.

How it all works:

Stage 1 — The Design

Initial Client Consultation with Ian Hunter
This first meeting is a very important part of the design process — this is where I can get a sense of how you want your new garden to look and what kind of budget you are considering. I can show you examples of other gardens I have designed and built, and we can walk round your existing garden and discuss its merits and things you would like changed. I will take notes during our meeting to enable me to establish a working plan from which I can start the process of designing your garden. This part of the service is free, and at this stage we can decide if you want me to go ahead with a design. If you agree I will send you a letter of confirmation with an outline of our discussions and a design price.
Site Survey
Once we have agreed that the design will go ahead I will make a second garden visit. I will carry out a full site analysis where I will be noting the aspects, soil type, measurements, position of features, plants to be retained, which new plants would best suit your garden conditions, access, special challenges and so on.
Designing the Garden
Once I have all the relevant information I start working on the design, which normally takes between 3 to 4 weeks. The plans are all hand-drawn and produced to scale, and show how your new garden will look, including a detailed planting plan if requested. When I’ve finished I will present the plans to you in person so that you have an opportunity to discuss them and understand them fully. Once you are happy with the design you will be presented with an invoice for the work carried out so far. This is the end of the design stage!

Stage 2 — Garden Construction

At this next stage I will visit you again, this time with a detailed estimate of the costs involved in building your garden. This is the stage at which you can decide to employ another contractor if you so wish.

Once the costs are agreed I will send you a contract outlining start and finish dates, payment schedule, requirements etc. Then the work begins!
